You kneel down and shine your flashlight on the grate. It’s hard to see beyond the narrow slats, but it looks as though there is a large duct of some kind behind it. You don’t feel any heat coming out of it currently, if it is for heating at all. Given its size, you could probably fit inside of it without too much trouble, if you could get the cover off, and were of a mind to do so.

Ordinarily you’d need a screwdriver for something like that, but it looks like all the screws holding the panel on are already gone; in fact, you notice one screw on the floor in the dust. You guess the building manager must be sleeping on the job. Or maybe he has other things to worry about…
